Profile For me, knives and other edged tools are close companions. I use them everyday in my work as a joiner and cabinet maker and understand that a reliable tool is a highly valuable item. I have owned several factory made knives that in one way or another did not live up to my requirements and so in 2005 I set about making a knife with the tools and machinery available in my woodworking shop. Needless to say since that first knife my knowledge, skills and metalwork shop have grown considerably! At the heart of my work is a desire to establish through testing and feedback the techniques which bring out the best in the materials I use. To this end I undertake all aspects of the work and regularly test my blades. I am passionate about the qualities I feel are gained in the forging process and so I am always keen to recommend the forged blade. Steel I work predominantly in O1 high carbon tool steel, which I have found to have excellent edge holding qualities, while also remaining tough and resilient. Furthermore O1 can be sourced at a consistently high quality and in a wide range of sizes from suppliers in the U.K. At this time I don't produce my own Damascus. However I do work with Damascus steel imported from the U.S.A, I will also work with stainless steels such as RWL 34 and 12C27 Sandvick steel. These steels are great blade steels and their level of performance is far beyond that of the stainless steel used in most factory made knives. Methods of manufacture I prefer the hand forged blade, as like many smiths, I believe the forging process imparts further desirable qualities to the finished knife. I do make some knives by the stock removal method as this makes some designs easier to accomplish. Heat Treatment A good heat treatment makes the difference between a good knife and an inferior one. Over time I have developed methods that produce a well balanced and serviceable blade. Most of my blades are edge quenched, which gives a hardened cutting edge whilst retaining a softer spine and tang. I find this method makes for a more durable blade. Handles I work with both stabilised and un-stabilised timber and can source most species of exotic wood. I also work with Micarta. All un-stabilised handles will be treated with Danish Oil and all completed knives will be sealed with Renaissance Wax. Sheaths All knives come complete with a hand stitched 3mm Dakota leather sheath, hand-made by me specifically for the knife and wet moulded to it. These can be belt, neck or pack sheaths in right or left hand.
